Attorneys For Family-Held Enterprises (AFHE) presentation

I enjoyed the opportunity to present to the international Attorneys for Family-Held Enterprises (AFHE) Mid-Year Conference in Cleveland, OH on November 10, 2017. Richard Lutringer and I talked about “Using Mediation Within the Family Enterprise to Bring Positive Change From Internal Conflict”. It was a great chance to discuss (because interactive presentations are my favorite kind!) how mediation focused on keeping a family and its business together can be so valuable. Many people know mediation only in the context of ending relationships or settling disputes between parties who have no relationship at all or one that is purely commercial.

Families in family businesses usually want to prevent and resolve challenges in a way that will preserve them — not destroy one or both. The talk covered some important basics: conflicts and disputes, different types of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), helping clients have enough knowledge about these options to make informed choices, and implications of recent research on family businesses.
